Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen ‘completely disagrees’ with SEC suspending Dillon Day
Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is not thrilled with the SEC’s decision to suspend Dillon Day, the Bulldogs’ starting center.
“We completely disagree with the ruling that was given to us by the league, but we are going to follow the commissioner’s decision,” Mullen said, per The Dispatch.
Video replays showed the 6-foot-4, 299-pound Day stepping on two LSU players during MSU’s upset win Saturday night. The conference stated that Day, a senior, committed “multiple flagrant and unsportsmanlike acts” in the game, which warranted his suspension for the team’s Oct. 4 game against Texas A&M.
The conference also said that the ruling was based on “previous disciplinary action for similar behavior.”
Despite this, Mullen, who suspended Day for a half last season for a similar incident, said he “didn’t see anything wrong with it.”
In the video, Day is seen sprinting up the field and following the play on two separate runs. In the first instance, Day jumps and lands on the stomach of Davon Goldchaux with his right foot. In the other play, Day was trailing the play and jumped to avoid a teammate, but when he jumped he landed on LSU’s Rashard Robinson.
Day defended himself and said that “he was going too fast at 300 pounds to stop” and that he “tried to clear the pile after not being able to stop.”
Day is one of the top centers in the SEC, so it’s a big loss for the No. 14 Bulldogs in a highly-anticipated matchup against the sixth-ranked Aggies. Senior Archie Muniz is listed as Day’s backup, but Mullen said the team has multiple guys who could be rotated in.
“We will have to move a bunch of guys around and mix and mingle some things, no different than if (Day) was injured,” Mullen said.
The team has a bye this week, so it will have some extra time to figure out who will fill in for Day.
